Glossary of Common Terms in Web Hosting

Asp Host

A host that supports Active Server pages (ASP) server-side technology by Microsoft.

Colocated Hosting

When a company keeps their Web server(s) at another company's location. Colocated hosting requires knowledge about server administration.

Dedicated Hosting

With dedicated hosting, an entire server is dedicated to a client's Web site.

DNS

Domain Names System. It is dedicated to tieing up domain names and IP addresses.

IP Address

Internet Protocol Address, a number used to uniquely identify a computer (a personal computer or a Web server) on the Internet.

PHP Hosting

A host that supports PHP Hypertext Preprocessor, an open-source server-side technology.

Shared Hosting

When several Web sites are located on the same Web server sharing the same IP address and resources.
